ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Max Troiani (Bentley University) drove in four runs with three hits including a pair of triples, and the Lake Monsters clinched the 2018 Interstate Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series with an 8-4 win over the Monarchs, Thursday night at Towers Field on the campus of the University of Rochester.
Troiani drove in a run with single as the Lake Monsters grabbed a lead they never surrendered in the first inning. The Monsters third baseman added a run-scoring triple in the third and insurance runs with a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth.
Zach DeVito (Corning CC) allowed two runs on two hits over three innings to pick up the win. Donnie Moffat (St. Bonaventure University) worked a scoreless seventh to seal the victory.
Dom Palma (Manhattan College) brought home the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to score Jonathan Catapano (Grand Valley State University). Dan Freese (Cazenovia College) followed with a double that plated Sean Flannery (Kings College), and Troiani capped the frame with his first of three run-scoring hits.
Ryan Kalbfus (Gannon University) cut the deficit to one with two-run home run in the second. Tanner Cooper (Finger Lakes CC) and Jackson Smith (Ithaca College) added an RBI apiece in the fifth to pull the Monarchs again within one at 5-4.
But that was as close as they would get.
Troiani brought in Palma and Freese with his fourth three-bagger of the season for the final margin of victory.
Freese finished 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored. Catapano was 3-for-4. Palma singled and drove in two runs. Nate Chase (Grand Valley State University) doubled and scored a run. Zach Harter was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
Cole Penders (Brockport College) was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Monarchs. Hector Vargas (Corning CC) struck out three over 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
