Needing a win to stay alive, Jake Hewitt (St. John Fisher College) hurled a complete game, and the Lake Monsters defeated the Monarchs, 8-1 to force a decisive game in the 2018 Interstate Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series.

Hewitt struck out nine and walked five in his longest outing of the season. The right-hander allowed five hits and worked out of bases-loaded jams in the third and fifth innings before surrendering a run on a one-out fielder’s choice in the seventh and final inning.

Nate Chase (Grand Valley State) tripled and sparked a two-run fourth, and the Monsters had all the runs they needed for the win. Dom Palma (Manhattan College) followed with an RBI single, and Dan Freese (Cazenovia College) delivered what would be the eventual game winner with a double.

Palma finished 2-for-4 on the night. Freese was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Chase walked twice and scored two runs.

Max Troiani (Bentley University) collected a single, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Zach Harter and David Stirpe (Messiah College) scored a run apiece.

Tanner Cooper singled and scored the lone Monarchs run.

The Monarchs and Lake Monsters will meet Thursday in the deciding game of the ICBL Championship Series. A 5:45 PM first pitch is scheduled at the University of Rochester.
